Juniors

The journey begins here. An elite athlete is a blend of many physical and psychological factors, many of which are acquired during their formative years in a sport. Research has proven that the type of mentors and coaches surrounding a young athlete will have a major bearing on their development, as will the standards and culture they experience within their club.

A Junior rower is 18 years old, or younger. Several of Mosman’s greatest rowers took their first stroke at our club. MRC recruits and attracts Year 8 students from all backgrounds, and the selection process is based on anthropomorphic data and suitability for on-water training. The program offers an opportunity to develop rowing and coxing skills in a positive club environment alongside world standard rowers.

Those accepted into the program develop the technique of rowing in a learning style adapted for each individual, in a single scull. As a sound level of technical competency is reached in a single scull, progression follows to the junior squad.

The aim of the junior squad is to develop the rower’s physiological ability in the gym, on the water training and also in competition. As goals are met, athletes may move to the Elite Development Squad.

Attitude and work ethic are among the first things our Junior coaches look for, as these are probably the only things we can’t provide. Respect for coaches, equipment, fellow rowers, and also the club are all part of this. Many Juniors who come to Mosman and stay become champions, but just as important to us is that they become good people.
